There are two kinds of people who’ve tried an offlinear keyboard. The ones who tell you it changed their life, and the ones who gave up inside the first week and now insist the whole thing is stupid. The strange thing is that everyone in the second group likely failed for exactly the same reason. A single mistake that nobody warned you about before you start. So whether you’re about to make the switch to an off linear layout keyboard or or you’ve already tried and maybe bounced off it, this is the video I wish somebody had handed me.
Today we’re covering a simple six step method for making the change to orphilinear stick and getting your typing speed back as fast as humanly possible, built around that one mistake and ensuring that you never make it. We’re going to cover a genuinely surprising piece of science about how your muscle memory actually actually gets built one step that feels completely backwards but is secretly the fastest way through and saved for the very end. The real reason I bother with all this or linear mechanical keyboard ergonomic stuff which has almost nothing to do with typing. Before all of that, let’s answer the question you’re actually here for. Is learning to type on an ortholinear layout keyboard even worth it?
Let me be quick and honest because I made a whole separate video on the deep why behind ortholinear layout keyboards, which I’ll link in the description and I don’t want to repeat myself. There are three reasons that the ortholinear layout is worth it and they build on each other. Reason 1 your body. On a normal keyboard, your fingers reach diagonally for keys that are offset for no good reason. On an ortholinear keyboard, every key sits in a straight column directly above and below your finger.
Each of your fingers does way less reaching and when you combine that with a split, which most orpho keyboards are, the long term win for your wrists, your shoulders, your posture. It’s real for me, aches I’d carried for years quietly disappeared. Reason 2 your typing. Once you’re through the adjustment, the movement around an orpho layout is simpler and more logical and and for a lot of people that means faster, more natural typing over time. And typing speed is one of those quietly enormous skills.
Ali Abdo has a great video on typing at around 150 words per minute and his point sticks with me. The faster the gap closes between your thoughts and the screen, the more you actually create. Typing is the one skill almost every knowledge worker uses all day and and almost nobody trains. Reason three is the one I care about most, but I’m going to make you wait for it, because it only really makes sense once you understand all the rest of this. Just know this.
Learning to use the ortholinear layout opens a door, and behind that door is something I genuinely get excited about. So, yes, Ortholayout is 100% worth it. Now, let’s make sure you don’t quit in week one. And to do that, you need to understand a really peculiar thing about muscle memory. Here’s what almost everyone gets wrong.
They think learning to type on a new layout is about grinding hours and hours, powering through brute forcing it until your fingers give in. That’s not how the brain builds muscle memory at all. And the science here is genuinely surprising. When researchers study motor learning, the kind your fingers do, they find two completely separate processes. The first is the improvement you get during practice, which you’d expect.
But the second one is a strange one. After you stop practicing and go to sleep, your brain just kind of keeps on learning. You wake up measurably better at the skill than when you went to bed without a single extra minute of practice. Sleep consolidates the movement. Scientists have shown these are two different systems.
And the overnight gain doesn’t even depend on how hard you grinded that day. Think about that. You get better while you sleep, which means short daily practice followed by a good night’s sleep beats a marathon session every single time. You’re not trying to force the pattern in, you’re trying to plant it. Then let your brain grow it overnight.
And there’s a second finding that matters even more, because it’s the one mistake I keep promising you. When you try to learn two conflicting movement patterns at the same time, they interfere with each other. Your brain cannot cleanly consolidate two rival muscle memories at once. Instead, it just gets worse at both. Now think about what most people do when they fall into the keyboard rabbit hole and start getting excited about keyboards.
They switch to Author linear and also try, like, home row mods and also maybe like a whole new letter layout like Colmac, all in the same week. Free rival patterns all fighting for the same overnight consolidation. They learn all of them slowly, feel like they’re failing at everything, and then just quit. The mistake there is not the keyboard or trying to learn new things. It’s the stacking.
So with that understood, here’s the method. It comes in two halves. What to do before you unplug anything, and what to do in the two weeks that rewire your hands before you dive into ortholinear layout keyboards follow these steps. Step one Pick your week. Do not start this the week of a deadline or a launch or anything that depends on you typing fast, your speed is going to drop temporarily and dramatically.
Start on a quiet week where a slow few days cost you nothing. This one decision removes most of the stress. STEP 2 and this is the big one. Change only one thing. Just the author.
Linear layout. Not home row mods. Not. Not a new letter layout. Not fancy new switches.
You also have to get used to one change. So your brain has exactly one new pattern to consolidate each night. Master ortho. First you can add the clever stuff months later once this is like more automatic. Now, one honest caveat, because I don’t want you overthinking this if the only change you’re making is going from a normal keyboard to a split keyboard.
And but keeping the staggered layout that kind of like barely counts. Pulling the two halves apart is such a small adjustment that your hands sort it out in like a day or two. Just go for it. The thing that actually rewires your muscle memory is the columns, not the gap in the middle. Step three.
Nail your foundation. Before you chase anything else, put your fingers on the home position and learn deliberately which finger owns which key. On an ortho board, every finger moves straight up and down its own column. No reaching across, no cheating with the wrong finger, because on these boards a lazy finger means a wrong key or two keys at once. And sort out your spacebar early.
Most ergo boards put space on a thumb key, of which there are usually several. So find the one thumb key that feels natural and kind of just commit to it. Get the foundation clean and and everything above it comes faster. That’s the setup. Now let’s get to the part where your hands actually change.
The two weeks that rewire your hands. Step four, 20 minutes a day. That’s it. Structured practice on a typing trainer, something like monkey type or keybr.com keebr keybor.com and then you stop. Remember the science.
You’re planting the pattern, not forcing it. And sleep does the rest. 20 focused minutes daily will get you through this faster than 3 hour rage sessions ever could. And when you practice, pay special attention to the top row and the bottom row, because that’s where orphalinea scrambles your old muscle memory the hardest. The home row will feel fine pretty quickly.
The rows above and below are where the real work is. Step five. And this is the one that feels completely backwards. Chase accuracy, not speed. Every instinct will scream at you.
To type faster, to claw your old speed back. Ignore it. If you push for speed while the pattern is still forming, all you do is practice your mistakes and bake them in. Slow down. Hit the right key.
Let it be correct and boring. The speed comes back on its own and it comes back fast once the accuracy is solid. When I switched, I dropped from around 70 words a minute to 26. Yeah, 26. But because I chased accuracy first, I was back up to 40 within around three days.
Step 6 Bend the keyboard, not your hands. This is the permission most people don’t know they have if a particular key keeps fighting you. If your pinky hates where something sits, move it. These boards are almost all fully programmable. The layout is a starting suggestion.
It’s not like a law. I remapped my own board until it actually matched how my hands wanted to move and my speed jumped the moment I did. The goal was never to conform to the keyboard. It’s to make the keyboard fit you. In fact, just last week I moved the key on my Ergodox, which uses an ortho layout.
I moved the dash key from the right bottom row to top right on the left side of the keyboard simply because it kept bugging me every time. I had to sort of like tuck my my right thumb under my right index finger to reach it where it was placed before. I never really thought about this key previously when I was originally mapping my keys, but turns out that I use it fairly regularly, so placing it somewhere easier to reach that didn’t cause discomfort made the most sense. Follow those six steps. Protect your sleep.
Change one thing at a time and. And the week that makes most people quit becomes the week your hands quietly rewire themselves. In a month, you won’t even remember it felt hard. So here’s that third reason that ortho layout keyboards are actually worth it that I made you wait for almost every truly great ergonomic keyboard in the world. The sculpted split boards with the thumb clusters, the tiny feather light ones, the ones with a trackball built right into them.
They are all ortholinear, every single one. Which means learning ortho isn’t really about one keyboard. It’s the key that unlocks the entire world the moment your hands speak. Columns. This whole universe of beautiful, strange hand shaped keyboards opens up to you and you can move between any of them.
That, for me, is the actual prize, not the speed, not even the ergonomics. As much as I love them and is that I get to keep exploring for the rest of my life.
